Jangan Chik-Naengmyeon: A Cold Noodle Institution Since 1997

Hello! This is the corner where I introduce local flavors that aren’t really known outside the neighborhood — the kind of places tourists rarely stumble on.

Today I’m covering a deeply local naengmyeon (cold noodle) specialist in Jangan-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, called Jangan Chik-Naengmyeon. Having opened in 1997, it’s nearly 30 years old at this point. It sits a bit off the tourist track, and that’s exactly why it still has that unpolished, genuine atmosphere surrounded by longtime regulars.

The Atmosphere

The interior is a small, cozy diner with mint-green walls that stand out right away. There’s counter seating and table seating, and around lunchtime it was busy with local office workers and neighborhood regulars. A menu board and a neighborhood map are posted on the wall, giving off a real sense of how long this place has been rooted in the area.

It’s definitely not a shiny, trendy interior — but that plainness gives you a certain confidence that only genuinely good food survives here.

Menu and Prices

he menu is simple, with six items total:

  • Mul-naengmyeon (water-based cold noodles): 9,000 won
  • Bibim-naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles): 9,000 won
  • Yeolmu-naengmyeon (young radish cold noodles): 9,000 won
  • Hwangtae-naengmyeon (dried pollock cold noodles): 10,000 won
  • Jjin-mandu (steamed dumplings): 5,000 won
  • Jjin-mandu (steamed dumplings): 5,000 won
  • Galbi-mandu (short-rib dumplings): 5,000 won

A size upgrade costs an extra 1,000 won. Given typical prices in central Seoul, this is genuinely reasonable pricing.

実際に食べたもの

The steamed dumplings arrived first — a chewy skin packed with a savory, flavorful filling. Dipped in vinegar soy sauce, it was hard to stop reaching for more. Thin kimchi and pickled radish came alongside as sides.

The main event, bibim-naengmyeon, was a visually striking dish — buckwheat noodles topped with a generous amount of sweet-and-spicy gochujang sauce, a boiled egg, and thin slices of pear (or sometimes radish). Before mixing, adding a bit of the mustard (gyeoja) on the table takes it up a notch. There’s also a side broth (yuksu) you can pour in a little at a time, which mellows out the noodles and softens the spice — highly recommended. The menu board on the wall even notes this directly: “Bibim-naengmyeon tastes even better with a little broth poured in.”

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Nearly 30 years in business, with a consistently reliable flavor
  • Reasonable prices (naengmyeon runs 9,000–10,000 won)
  • Bibim-naengmyeon lets you customize your own broth and spice level
  • Pairs excellently with the steamed dumplings

Cons:

  • Located a bit away from tourist areas, so public transit access takes some time
  • Old-school interior with limited seating
  • No English or Japanese menu, so pointing at the menu or using a translation app is your best bet
