60 Gye Chicken in Jeonnong-dong: A Neighborhood Fried Chicken Spot

Hey everyone! Today I’m covering a fried chicken spot I visited for dinner yesterday — 60 Gye Chicken, Jeonnong SK Apartment Shopping Street Branch, in Jeonnong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. It’s close to Cheongnyangni Station on Line 1, in an area mostly populated by locals. This isn’t a tourist spot at all — it felt like a genuine everyday chicken shop for people living in the neighborhood.

Location and Access

The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of a shopping strip inside Jeonnong SK Apartment. The address is 148 Sagajeong-ro, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul. It’s within walking distance of Cheongnyangni Station or Jegi-dong Station on Line 1. Since the surrounding area is residential, it’s a bit off the typical tourist route — but that’s exactly what makes the pricing and flavor feel so genuinely local.

What We Ordered

This time we ordered a half-and-half of gochu chicken (spicy pepper chicken) and horangi chicken (tiger chicken), both boneless.

  • Gochu chicken: a soy-based sauce with a kick of chili — rich and savory with a spicy edge
  • Horangi chicken: a crunchy, cornflake-like coating with a garlicky, slightly sweet flavor

Ordering both together is great, since you get to enjoy a sweet-and-spicy option and a savory, garlicky option side by side.ところです。

Taste Impressions

The horangi chicken had a thick, satisfyingly crunchy coating with a strong garlic flavor — a perfect match with beer. The gochu chicken was well-coated in a sweet-spicy sauce, with a nice accent from scallions and garlic. The pickled radish (chikinmu) and mayo on the side were the usual staples, offering a refreshing reset between bites of chicken.

A Few Thoughts on Franchise Chicken

These days, franchise fried chicken shops are everywhere across Korean cities. 60 Gye Chicken is one of them, and honestly, Korea’s fried chicken scene has become almost entirely franchise-dominated — independently run, old-school chicken shops seem to be slowly disappearing. That’s something I feel a little wistful about personally. I still fondly remember the chicken my dad used to bring home from the market on payday when I was a kid. That humble flavor holds a different kind of special memory compared to today’s franchise chicken.

That said, Korea has a genuinely wide variety of franchise chicken brands, and I like pretty much all of them. Each one has its own personality, and comparing them is part of the fun.

By the way, there’s a common rumor about 60 Gye Chicken that they only fry 60 birds per batch of oil before changing it — but this isn’t officially confirmed information. It’s just a widely circulated rumor, so take it with a grain of salt.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Great variety of flavors — spicy, sweet, and savory options to choose from
  • Boneless (sunsal) options make it easy for kids or anyone who wants to skip the bones
  • Local pricing with generous portions

Cons:

  • Located away from tourist areas, so it takes a bit of time to get there
  • Being in a residential shopping strip, there’s no English or Japanese menu for foreign visitors
